More Elgg teething problems (and a solution)

Elgg Portfolio CMALT Tinyurl

I've decided to create a Neil's CMALT portfolio group so I can access the pages plugin to create a structured portfolio.

To aid with navigation I thought I'd add a couple of links at the bottom of each page like this.

Portfolio Index |  Neil's CMALT Portfolio

I doing this I found a glitch in Elgg.

The link to the portfolio index works fine this goes to http://uspace.org.uk/cmalt/pg/pages/view/109

but the original link (http://uspace.org.uk/cmalt/pg/groups/97/neils-cmalt-portfoilo) to the Portfolio does not work, despite the address being cut and pasted from a browser. I noticed that I'd put in the link to the Portfolio with the www in the url  http://www.uspace.org.uk/cmalt/pg/groups/97/neils-cmalt-portfoilo - this works.

It looks like Elgg is truncating the address - removing the www from the url when entering a link in the pages editor and despite the server being configured to recognise www.uspace.org.uk and uspace.org.uk/cmalt. This issue only seems to impact on some internal URLs (those on th uspace domain)

As I want to provide a link back the Portfolio I found the easiest solution was to create a TinyURL - http://tinyurl.com/neils-cmalt to use as the link to my Portfolio from within the installation of Elgg

Using Elgg as a Portfolio tool

ELGG, CMALT, portfolio

I've been experimenting with the best way of using Elgg 1.0 as a Portfolio for my CMALT application.

I started off with using a series of Pages in my profile but discovered a number of issues.

  1. The pages are displayed in the order of creation, they cannot be sorted either numercially or alphabetical (i.e. you can't name them using a 1,2,3 or A,B,C prefix to ensure they are displayed in the correct order)
  2. You can't rename pages once created
  3. You can create sub-pages but not sub-sub-pages
  4. Access Option for the Pages created in the profile are limited to Public, Logged in Users or Private. As I want to limited access to these pages to a subset of logged in users it's not the right option for me to use Pages from my profile

Plan B has been to investigate the setting up a Group fro my portfolio. This gives me more options in terms of access as I can ivite users to see the portfolio. There are still issues with the order of Pages I create as the last page to be created is the first to be seen, but I'm able to add a table of contents int he group's decsription. The page renaming is still not possible, the I'm sure the group for a portfolio is the way forward

ELGG, JISC, CMALT

having had the invitation to apply for CMALT through our JISC involvement I thought we could use Elgg1 as the platform for developing our portfolios
