Using Elgg as a Portfolio tool

ELGG, CMALT, portfolio

I've been experimenting with the best way of using Elgg 1.0 as a Portfolio for my CMALT application.

I started off with using a series of Pages in my profile but discovered a number of issues.

  1. The pages are displayed in the order of creation, they cannot be sorted either numercially or alphabetical (i.e. you can't name them using a 1,2,3 or A,B,C prefix to ensure they are displayed in the correct order)
  2. You can't rename pages once created
  3. You can create sub-pages but not sub-sub-pages
  4. Access Option for the Pages created in the profile are limited to Public, Logged in Users or Private. As I want to limited access to these pages to a subset of logged in users it's not the right option for me to use Pages from my profile

Plan B has been to investigate the setting up a Group fro my portfolio. This gives me more options in terms of access as I can ivite users to see the portfolio. There are still issues with the order of Pages I create as the last page to be created is the first to be seen, but I'm able to add a table of contents int he group's decsription. The page renaming is still not possible, the I'm sure the group for a portfolio is the way forward
