What is Stress?
Stress is difficult to define, because many people thrive on a busy lifestyle whilst others get stressed by the slightest deviation in their daily routine.
Stress is highly individual, but as rule-of-thumb stress occurs when:
Someone believes the challenges inherent in a given situation outstrips their ability to cope
Signs of stress build up include:
- Insomnia
- Impatience and irritability
- Angry outbursts
- Poor concentration
- Difficulty making decisions
- Drinking or smoking more
- Not enjoying food or over-eating
- Being unable to relax and feeling 'pressured'
- Physical tension

Coping with stress
Because stress affects our body, thinking & emotions a holistic approach is the most effective.
This may include:
- Avoiding foods that stress the body
- Venting stress via physical activity
- Getting sufficient sleep
- Taking time to relax
- Resting when overworked
- Avoiding conflict
- Sharing problems and concerns
- Learning to say no to unreasonable demands
- Effective time management
