Stress management

What is Stress?

Stress is difficult to define, because many people thrive on a busy lifestyle whilst others get stressed by the slightest deviation in their daily routine.

Stress is highly individual, but as rule-of-thumb stress occurs when:

Someone believes the challenges inherent in a given situation outstrips their ability to cope

Signs of stress build up include:

  • Insomnia
  • Impatience and irritability
  • Angry outbursts
  • Poor concentration
  • Difficulty making decisions
  • Drinking or smoking more
  • Not enjoying food or over-eating
  • Being unable to relax and feeling 'pressured'
  • Physical tension

Coping with stress

Because stress affects our body, thinking & emotions a holistic approach is the most effective.

This may include:

  • Avoiding foods that stress the body
  • Venting stress via physical activity
  • Getting sufficient sleep
  • Taking time to relax
  • Resting when overworked
  • Avoiding conflict
  • Sharing problems and concerns
  • Learning to say no to unreasonable demands
  • Effective time management
